At the Clinica Sierra Vista in Fresno, Maria Gutierrez’s busy office vaccinates 25 or more children each day. Says Maria, I didn’t think using CAIR would be easy, but it is! It only took an hour or two to learn how to use all the basic functions like entering an immunization, vaccine inventory, and reminder/recall. I really like that I don’t have to wait for a chart anymore; the e-record pops up in seconds! Since all our staff can access the record (like front desk, nursing, medical records, and providers), we save a lot of time by not having to wait for a chart to review.
We don’t chart by hand anymore. But even so, we save time! The tracking and recall features in CAIR more than make up for the extra minute or so to enter a patient’s shot record.
Now, using CAIR, I can find complete immunization histories fast and identify overdue immunizations more accurately and efficiently. I also love that I can manage vaccine inventories without physically checking every refrigerator or freezer.
My favorite CAIR functions are the patient safety and quality checks. For example, CAIR helps decrease errors by flagging invalid vaccine doses. It also calculates immunizations due based on age of child, immunization history, and ACIP guidelines. The online guide is invaluable to a novice who has not yet mastered the complex immunization schedule. And, just as important, I can easily evaluate how well our practice is immunizing on schedule by generating lists of patients with overdue immunizations.
Would I ever go back to an office that doesn’t use CAIR? No way! CAIR is a paperless system that really increased our health center’s efficiency by minimizing wasted time. My colleagues and I are able to accomplish the job quicker. I can generate reports to assess and evaluate our practice. I also provide feedback and if I see any low immunization rates. CAIR has helped me and our office improve deficiencies and raise immunization rates.
